Underground Railroad: Part 3
What was Canada's role with the Underground Railroad? Why did most runaway slaves end up in Canada?
The role of Canada with the underground railroad was to enslave Africans. Canada helped Africans get freedom during the slavery of Africans. They chose to come to Canada because it was called the land of “freedom”. Canada was where they could live as free citizens and get there rights. Canadians also helped Africans get to Canada through underground railroad. A direct slave trade from Africa to Canada was never done. More than 100,000 slaves escaped through to Canada from the underground railroad. With the Civil War in the U. S., a lot of black refugees enlisted in the Union Army and, while some later on returned to Canada, many stayed in the United States. Most runaway slaves ended up in Canada because it was where the Canadians helped Africans come to. It was the final destination for Africans. Not all Africans ended up in Canada, some ended up in America as well. When there was a runaway slave they went to Canada because it was far away from where they’re slave masters were or anybody Else's. During one point Canada also slaved Africans, but it ended shortly. After they ended enslavement in Canada they made Canada a destination point for Africans who were slaves. And now Canada Has a memorial tomb for the Africans who passed away during slavery.
