1. Why did Mark create "Facesmash"?
-So he and others could rate girls online.
2. Do you believe that this website could lead to young women feeling insecure about their appearance? Based on our discussions in class, how do you think most of these women would react to their ratings.
-To most young women this could of left them feeling insecure about there looks. Most women probably would not want to be rated by their looks but if they got high rating they probably wouldn't mind.
3. Do you think Mark was a cyberbully? Please elaborate?-
-I think that in the beggining of the movie Mark was a cyberbully because he was blogging mean things about his ex-girlfriend online. Later on you could tell that he regret doing that.
4. When does Mark decide to expand the site to other schools? What role did Erica have in this decision?-
-He decided to expand to other school when he got more people involved with the creation of "facebook". He expanded it to other school so that the website would get more members and so it was available to more than just one school. Erica's role in the desicion was her telling Mark that he had no friends in the school so that might of physchologically made him want friends outside of the school, thus expanding his website to other school and gaining recognition.
5. “I was your only friend - you had one friend,” Eduardo tells Mark across the deposition table. What is Mark and Eduardo's friendship like? Why did it break down?
-Mark and Eduardo were like best friends and creating facebook brought them closer in the beggining but later on it tore them apart. There friendship broke down because later on Sean and Mark decided to take Eduardo's share of the company "facebook" and lessen it to 0.3%. By doing that Eduardo got upset and sued Mark. Near the end Mark and Eduardo became friends again and Mark took Sean out of the company which was the right thing to do.
6. How did Mark get the idea to include relationship status on Facebook profiles? What explanation does he give to Eduardo for including this on Facebook?
- Mark got the idea of putting a relationship status on facebook by stating that if he did then he and others woud be able to tell if peopl were single or not.
7. “As if every thought that tumbles through your head was so clever it would be a crime for it not to be shared,” Mark's ex Erica snaps at Mark. Why are people drawn to the idea of broadcasting their personal lives on the internet?
- People want to broadcast their personal lives on the internet because it shows other people how they are like, what they like and dislike, etc.
8. “The internet's not written in pencil, Mark. It's written in ink,' states Erica, seething at the comments he blogged about her. Why is the typed word so powerful? Why is it tempting to misuse this power online? What positive things can social-networking sites achieve when used to their full potential?
-Typed words are powerful because they can't permanantly be erased. When you have so much power on the internet it is easy to misuse it and some ways people do that are stating rude comments or pictures towards somebody because it makes them feel good abput it. Social-Networking can also be a positive thing because it can also be used for help, stating important things, etc.
9. In what ways does Facebook encourage us to define ourselves? How does this affect our identity and self-image?
-Facebook encourages us to define ourselves by telling us to post pictures of ourselves, make comments about anything, etc. It could affect our identity and self image becuse some people use facebook as a tool to create misconceptions about others and when those misconceptions are put on the internet they never die, making it seem as if it is true.
10. How are the themes of 'coolness' and money played out through the film? How do you think users of Facebook will react to knowing that, by sharing their lives publicly, they are allowing someone else to make billions from their personal information?
-Themes of coolness and money are used in this movie alot. Coolness was used more because Mark kept saying that if somethings not cool nobody is going to use and and if nobody uses it their website wouldn't bcome famous. Money was also talked about alot throughout this movie because without money the website wouldn't of even be existent. I think many facebook users don't really care that their personal information is being used to meke billions by Mark.
11. Facebook has around 500 million members worldwide. What impact has it had on our culture?
- Facebook has had a HUGE impact on our culture Because it let people show off who they really are and that either got them popular or fired from a job. Facebook is being used as a tool to cyberbully and embarass people, yet it also helps people by getting them noticed for who they really are. Overall i think that facebook has been a bad AND good impact on our culture.
