Underground Railroad: Part 2 Journal Entry
My name is Yasmeen and I am a slave part of the Underground Railroad.
I planned for my long journey ahead of time. To plan for this journey I packed the essentials,
the things I could carry in a small hidden sac such as a few water bottles, a
small blanket for those chilling nights , a knife in case I had to kill somebody
to reach my destination, and some food that won’t go bad, like nuts, and a jar
of peanut butter. my plan in basic form is to get to the land of freedom,
Canada. I had to face a rough journey from start to finish. I also
encountered a couple of obstacles like having to eat my food in tiny amounts,
rest and stay alert at the same time, and avoid being captured by the slave
masters. Including the obstacles, the journey was very dangerous and running away
from my slave master was like trying to run across a highway during rush hour.
The biggest dangers were getting to point A to point B alive and
well. I usually travelled at night following the North star or following the migrating
birds flying North. When I got tired is when I slept, not when it was night or
day. Usually i slept behind something like a tree, log, or boulders. Eventually
I started to run out of food and I had to get berries from bushes, fruit from
trees, and i killed some squirrels with my knife for meat. If I saw somebody that
I didn’t know I would hide behind anything I could fit my body inside or behind.
Some states I remember travelling through were California, Arizona, and Texas.
It was a lonely journey because I travelled alone, my family and friends snuck
onto a plane but there was no room for me, and they wouldn’t go unless I came
but i told them I wold make it alone. During my journey there were many houses I
passed, big houses, small houses, and even trailers.I rarely ever approached a
home, but when I did I made sure they didn’t see my face much. I travelled about
a thousand miles from California to Canada. It took me 2-3 miserable months to
get to Canada on foot. I had no idea how many miles I walked on a daily basis.
When my feet just had to rest, I would stop walking and rest. It was hard
travelling on foot while my family and friends were on 2 hour plane ride.
Finally, when my journey ended in Surrey,B.C i celebrated to myself, and my
stomach fluttered with overwhelming joy and pride. The reason I ended my journey
in Surrey,B.C was because thats where my family and friends plane landed.
